Lawyers representing the family of an unnamed black man shot in the back by US police have said he would need a “miracle” to walk again.
A Wisconsin police officer tugged at Jacob Blake’s top before he was shot several times while opening the door of his car in Kenosha.
At least one of the bullets went through his spinal cord, the family’s lawyer said.
The shooting has since led to the partial or complete severing of the 29-year-old’s spinal cord, meaning he is now paralysed from the waist down.
Doctors are reportedly unsure if he will recover the use of his legs.
Lawyer Ben Crump said: “His family believe in miracles, but the medical diagnosis right now is that he is paralysed and, because those bullets severed his spinal cord and shattered some of his vertebrae, it is going to take a miracle for Jacob Blake Jr to ever walk again.”
Mr Blake was shot at as his young children sat inside the car and was also left with bullet wounds in his stomach, arm and has damage to his kidney and liver.
It was also claimed that most of Blake’s colon and small intestine had to be removed.
The shooting has sparked civil unrest in the city, with buildings and cars being damaged.
It is the latest case of an unarmed black man being killed by police in the US, following the death of George Floyd earlier this year.
New bodycam footage before the death of George Floyd has revealed the moment he pleaded for police not to shoot while being held at gunpoint.
The chilling clips, which have been released by a judge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the US, showed the distressed Mr Floyd begging: "Mr Officer, please don't shoot me. Please man."
He was ordered to step out of his car after the police received a complaint he had attempted to pass a fake $20 bill to buy cigarettes at Cup Foods.
In the distressing video, the 46-year-old sobs and begs officer Thomas Lane not to pull the trigger.
Just minutes later, George Floyd was dead.
