Speaking from the Rose Garden, the US President said he wanted to redirect funds to other areas. Trump accused China of having total control over the organisation. He told reporters: “We have detailed the reforms that [the WHO] must make and engage with them directly, but they have refused to act.

“Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms we will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organisation and redirecting those funds to other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs.”

He once again accused Beijing of covering up the true extent of the outbreak when it first hit Wuhan.

Trump insisted: “China’s cover up of the Wuhan virus allowed the disease to spread all over the world, instigating a global pandemic that has cost more than 100,000 American lives, and over a million lives worldwide.

“Chinese officials ignored their reporting obligations to the World Health Organisation and pressured the World Health Organisation to mislead the world.”

According to Flightradar24, China did block international flight out of Wuhan, but only after January 23.

According to South China Morning Post, WHO were still advising for borders to stay open on January 31.

On that day, Trump introduced restrictions on flights from China.

However, the New York Times reports that 40,000 people entered the US on direct flights from China after these measures were introduced.

There have been accusations that screenings of these travellers were inadequate.

Last year, the US was the WHO’s largest contributor giving $893million (£723.5million).

At the time of writing, the US has had 1.78 million confirmed coronavirus cases.

Trump again referred to coronavirus as “Wuhan virus”.

He also said Hong Kong was no longer sufficiently autonomous from China to warrant different treatment.

The US is set to take steps to sanction individuals they believe have contributed to the eroding of Hong Kong’s autonomy.

According to Sky, Trump was expected to take questions regarding the death of George Floyd.

The President, however, left without taking any questions.

Trump visited China in his first year as President.

He visited Beijing in November 2017.

He met with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.
