An elderly taxi driver has died in Bangkok after urinating in a drain and then falling to his death.

After a night of drinking, Suwan Phromnok, 64, had an unfortunate accident with a sewer drain at the Caltex gas station in Bangkok’s Bang Khae district.

It has been reported that as the hole is only covered by tyres and not a grate, Suwan could easily fall down the cavernous and wet pit which measured 1 meter by 50 centimetres wide.

When his body was found, he was submerged in a fetal position with water up to his chest reports Coconuts.

According to his wife, 67-year-old Lauei Muenjai, Suwan had been repairing his taxi in the day and had gone to the pub with friends while he waited for it to be fixed.

After returning to the gas station later that evening, Suwan made the fatal error of attempting to urinate in the hole and fell to his death.

It is thought that the cause of this death is related to drowning rather than the fall.

Local Police chief Lt. Ekachai Innimit revealed that Suwan’s body was sent to Siriraj Hospital to determine his cause of death.

In the meantime, the police say they will review CCTV in the area to gather evidence.

Bangkok invested heavily in the creation of new water drainage infrastructure following the devastating flooding of the city in 1983.

But due to its wet climate, flooding is common in Bangok and as a result, storm drains are everywhere in the city.
