Shooting at Diplo concert after fight breaks out in crowd over necklace

A shooting at a Diplo concert in Brazil led to the DJ having to being rushed to safety off stage.

The US performer was just about to introduce himself on the stage when a fight broke out in the crowd.

Reports say one man was shot in the stomach and a woman was hit in the leg during the chaos at a carnival gig in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city.

Witnesses claim the trouble started after a man tried to steal a neck chain.

Diplo was recording the crowd on his phone for his Instagram story as he came onto the stage and captured the moment the gunshots rang out.

At the end of the post, he could be seen ducking for cover as the shooting started.

Pictures show Mississippi-born Diplo, 41, real name Thomas Pentz, being rushed off stage by security after the shooting started.

Photographer Amauri Nehn told UOL: "Everyone on top of the truck bent down and security guards went to protect Diplo.

"Someone heard a shot and warned the people who were on top of the truck to duck.

"When everything calmed down, the security guards removed Diplo from the truck.

"I went to the side of the trio and saw a boy, who was hit in the abdomen, and a girl, who was hit in the leg."

Witnesses say shooting broke out after a man tried to snatch a chain off a fellow reveller's neck.

The alleged victim then pulled a gun out and shot the thief, hitting him in the stomach.

One of the thief's female friends was then caught in the crossfire and shot in the thigh, according to police.

Diplo was on top of a truck moving through the carnival crowd when the shooting started.

The producer, who is half of act Major Lazer, had also performed at the Latinha Mix block in the Pinheiros district of the city the previous night.

Reports in Brazil say five people were also stabbed during a separate incident earlier in the festival.
