A man's body was also discovered in the property, but he has yet to be formally identified.

Northamptonshire Police said he will only be formally named after he has been identified some time next week.

The force said it is not looking for anyone else in connection with the murder.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Nicole Main said: "First and foremost I offer my condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and colleagues of Maddie.

"This case is exceptionally tragic and our team has been working over the past 48 hours to establish the circumstances that have led to the deaths of these two people."

She added that Maddie was a "young woman with a bright future", and said her family were being supported.

The inspector went on to say there is no known background of domestic abuse which has been found in the case, and investigators are continuing to appeal for information.
