A McDonald's restaurant has been evacuated following the discovery of a "potentially suspicious package", police have said.
Newton Park Services in Coatham Mundeville, Darlington, has been closed by authorities and evacuated as a precaution, police said.
A police cordon is now said to be in place.
Police have advised anyone planning on travelling through the area to plan alternative routes while the incident is ongoing.
A Durham Constabulary spokesperson told the Daily Star: "The A167 between junction 59 of the A1(M) and Aycliffe Business Park roundabout has been closed following the discovery of a potentially suspicious package on land near Newton Park services.
"The services and nearby area have been evacuated as a precaution, and a cordon put in place while emergency services deal with the incident.
"We would ask all motorists to avoid the area and find an alternative route."
People took to social media to try and find out about the incident following the road closures.
One person wrote: "A167 and Newton park services closed (McDonald’s)"
Another commented: "Waiting for the bomb squad my daughter works at the petrol station.
"McDonald’s, KFC and the petrol station have been evacuated all the staff r at the hotel."
"The bombsqaud are there," wrote another.
Others commented on the road closure.
"It is blocked off from the roundabout at the motorway to the roundabout at the side of KFC there is no getting past it," one person commented.
Another wrote: "You can't get further than the roundabout next to the big head traffic diverted towards industrial estate."
