Man arrested in connection with mysterious disappearance of elderly campers

A man has been arrested over the disappearance of an elderly couple who went missing in March, 2020.

Australian couple Carol Clay and Russell Hill went missing in the Wonnagatta Valley in north east Victoria on March 20 last year.

They went missing, with zero clues or evidence as to what happened at the time.

But now, more than a year later, a 55-year-old man was arrested yesterday.

The unnamed man, from nearby Caroline Springs, was taken into police custody at 5.30pm yesterday, local news reports state.

A Victoria Police spokesman said: “Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad have arrested a man as part of the investigation into missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay.

“The 55-year-old Caroline Springs man was arrested about 5.30pm yesterday and will be interviewed by police this morning.

“The investigation into the matter remains ongoing.”

While no charges have formally been made against the man, he remains detained for questioning today.

The potentially fatal drip began on March 19, when Mr Russell left his home to collect Ms Clay for the trip in his white Toyota Landcruiser.

They were supposed to return a few days later, but failed to do so.

Local police discovered their campsite, which had been burned down, at nearby River Creek Track on March 21.

The pair had brought a drone with, according to local police, but this has also vanished without a trace.

Mr Hill's daughter Debbie said: “It's really hard, it's not getting any better not knowing.

“It's just unknown, he just disappeared and you're just stuck in the middle

“I really don't believe he could be alive, he wouldn't hide.

“You just hope someone will speak up if they know something to help the situation, we just hope that if someone is thinking twice about saying something but they know something to just mention it to CrimeStoppers.

“We just want to know what happened and where he is.”
