French MEP and close Emmanuel Macron ally Nathalie Loiseau addressed UK’s chief Brexit negotiator, David Frost, and his aggressive tone when dealing with the European Union. Mr Frost sent an open letter to the European Union detailing the difficulties in the Brexit trade talks and the expectancies of the UK in late May. While on Radio 4’s Today Programme, Ms Loiseau insisted this aggressive tone does not help.

Ms Loiseau said: “Tell me why the letter sent by David Frost was so aggressive.

“Let me tell you something, it does not help.

“There were a number of requests included in the British negotiating text.

“They act as if the UK was still in the European Union but refusing to accept the rules and obligations of a member state.”

In the letter to Michel Barnier, Mr Frost emphasised key areas that needed to be addressed to ensure a trade deal would eventually be agreed.

“We are very clear that we are not seeking to negotiate directly with Member States and that is for you, as the EU’s negotiator, to manage any difference of perspective that may emerge.

“I would like to make three specific points that may help in clearing up any misunderstandings.

“We have tried to be consistent that we are looking for a suite of agreements with a Free Trade Agreement at the core.

“We do not seek to remain part of the Single Market or Customs Union, as we do not believe this is in the UK’s interest.”

Mr Frost also highlighted the UK was confused as to why the EU was not rapidly seeking to finalise an agreement similar to that it holds with other nations.

He wrote: “We find it perplexing that the EU, is insisting on additional, unbalanced and unprecedented provisions in a range of areas, as a precondition for agreement between us.

“We find it surprising that the EU not only insists on additional provisions but is also not willing even to replicate provisions in previous FTAs.”
