Loud explosions rock Kyiv after Putin’s vow of retaliation

Russia unleashed on Ukrainian cities in the early hours of May 4 some 40 explosive-laden drones with the words “for Moscow” written on them. Explosions could be heard in Kyiv, targeted by 24 Shaded-136/131 attack drones packed with explosives. The Kyiv Independent reported they were launched from the Bryansk region and the eastern coast of the Azov Sea.

The attack comes hours after the former Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, called for the “physical elimination” of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky amid accusations Kyiv had launched a drone strike aiming to kill Putin.

Mr Zelensky swiftly denied Moscow’s claims as he was visiting Finland.

He said: “We don’t attack Putin or Moscow. We fight on our territory. We are defending our villages and cities.”

An analysis by the Institute for the Study of War said the alleged drone attack on the Kremlin had been “likely staged” by Russia itself.

The US-based think-tank called the alleged attack an attempt to “bring the war home to a Russian audience and set the conditions for a wider societal mobilisation.”

The briefing, shared on Thursday, added: “Several indicators suggest that the strike was internally conducted and purposefully staged.”

Footage circulating on social media on May 3 showed what appeared to be a drone exploding near a flagpole on top of the Kremlin, in the heart of Moscow.

Two unidentified people could also be seen climbing on top of the building.

Russia said its leader was not at the Kremlin at the time of the alleged assassination attempt and was left unharmed.
