Seoul’s unification minister Kim Yeon-chul tendered his resignation on Wednesday, saying he bears responsibility for the breakdown in relations. Pyongyang state media accused South Korea of “systemically breaching and destroying” recent bilateral agreements. As per the BBC, state media called the South Korean defence ministry a “feared mongrel dog” that was “bragging and bluffing, rattling the dialogue partner and stoking [a] confrontational atmosphere”.

Ms Kim said: “The reason the north-south agreements which were so wonderful did not see even a single step of implementation was due to the noose of the pro-US flunkeyism into which he [South Korean President Moon Jae-in] put his neck.

“Even before the ink on the north-south agreement got dry, he accepted the ‘South Korea-US working group’ under the coercion of his master.”

Mr Moon’s office said on Wednesday, Pyongyang’s conduct had been senseless.

It warned Seoul would no longer accept unreasonable behaviour.

The defence ministry added: “It is our basic stance that the 19 September military agreement should be complied with without fail to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula and to prevent accidental clashes.”

The agreement signed on September 19 2018 was signed by both Mr Moon and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un.

The agreement laid out steps Pyongyang was prepared to take for denuclearisation.

Kim pledged to permanently shut down the Tongchang-ri missile test site with independent inspectors present.

The leader also said he would be prepared to shut down the nuclear production facility at Yongbyon.

But this was dependent on Donald Trump taking reciprocal steps.

Reports claim Kim wanted a lifting of international sanctions.

Trump has rejected this deal.

For National Security Advisor John Bolton accompanied Trump to two summits with Kim.

He discusses the North Korea summits in his book ‘The Room Where It Happened’.

The book is scheduled for publication on June 23.

According to ABC News, in the book Mr Bolton revealed Trump attempted to get Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to deliver a copy of Rocket Man by Elton John to Kim.

Trump had previously referred to Kim as “Little rocket man”.

Mr Bolton wrote: “Trump didn’t seem to realize Pompeo hadn’t actually seen Kim Jong Un, asking if Pompeo had handed over the Trump-autographed copy of Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man’ CD, which Pompeo had not.

“Getting this CD to Kim remained a high priority for several months.”

Mr Bolton was not involved in the third summit but said: “Trump walked into North Korea, with Kushner and Ivanka nearby.

“Kim looked delighted in the pictures, as he should have. What an incredible gift Trump had given him, coming to the DMZ for the personal publicity.”
