The bodies of three young children have been found at the property of a widower who was cleaning the home after the death of his wife, reports say.
The 41-year-old Frenchman was tidying the property after his spouse, 44, died of cancer and discovered a single corpse in a closet, according to German website RTL.
The widower contacted police on Monday who conducted a further search of the home and found two more young bodies wrapped in bags along with two knives in a shed near the family house.
It is unclear whether the bodies found in Mezeray, near Le Man in France, are those of newborn babies, infants or foetuses, however, an autopsy was ordered to be carried out by authorities.
According to BFM TV, a French news station, the man's wife suddenly died of cancer on August 1 and following her death he had decided he wanted to clean up the house they shared on the edge of a forest in Sarthe.
The French channel reported that the man found the first body in a locked cabinet in a garage and the two other corpses were located by officers in "a locked cabinet, in a shed away from the house".
The station added that the bodies did not appear to date from the same period of time.
Reports say that the couple were childless but the deceased woman had two children from a previous relationship.
