A documentary following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as they embarked on a royal tour of Africa upset Prince William and Kate Middleton, royal journalists have claimed.

William and his brother Harry’s relationship has reportedly deteriorated in recent years, and came to a head after Harry left the Royal Family in early 2020.

In an interview with US chat show host Oprah, Harry claimed that William “cannot escape” the royal institution and accepted that he and his brother are on “different paths”.

But new BBC documentary The Princes and the Press has claimed that even before their infamous split, the Sussexes' ventures were a source of frustration for William.

At the same time that William and Kate were embarking on a royal tour of Pakistan in October 2019, teaser clips of a new documentary about Harry and Meghan's South African tour were being broadcast.

“You could tell that it was upsetting the apple cart, to put it lightly, when it came to William and Kate’s team, but also the couple as well," observed Sky News royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills.

The documentary, titled Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, saw Meghan admit that she had found life as a royal "really challenging" and Harry hint at the prospect of a future move to the US.

And, asked to described how William responded to these claims in real time, the BBC’s royal correspondent Jonny Dymond suggested: “I heard he [William] was very, very, very unhappy.

“I put that to the palace and their response was, ‘he is very worried about his brother’.”

In the same episode, the journalists who had accompanied Wills on the trip also suggested that he had been on a charm offensive with the media, an act that they said will help “smooth” his eventual progression to monarch.

This comes as one commentator claimed that the Queen gave Harry and Meghan the “biggest smackdown” after she attended the joint christening of Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall’s sons.
