A hardline Islamic cult leader who is constantly surrounded by a retinue of busty glamour girls has been sentenced to 1,075 years in jail after a long and controversial trial.
Adnan Oktar, who also goes by the names Adnan Hoca and Harun Yahya, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, sexual abuse and fraud in July 2018, along with some 160 of his cult members.
In 2010, Oktar was named one of the world’s 50 most influential Muslims but many traditional Muslim clerics have expressed concern about the brash style in which he presents his bizarre theories.
Oktar owns a TV station in his native Turkey, and regularly broadcasts warnings that the End of the World is coming soon, from a brightly coloured television studio filled with attractive models wearing exotic makeup, wigs and bondage-style Versace dresses.
He calls his team of glamorous assistants his "harem" or his "kittens".
The idiosyncratic style of Oktar's evolution-denying cult has been described as a “sexed-up Disney version of Islam” by anthropologist Daniel Martin Varisco.
His harsh sentence comes despite Oktar’s close association with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The two are reportedly on very friendly terms, with Oktar describing Erdogan as an "immaculate Anatolian man" who deserves to rule Turkey until the end of time – which according to Oktar is coming any day now.
One of the aspects of Oktar’s bizarre cult that has been a particular focus of the court case is its finances.
It has been very unclear how the 64-year-old can afford to keep making big-budget documentary such as "The Collapse of Darwinism in Europe" and "Crystal Skull; work of aliens?" as well as run his TV station and publish innumerable books and pamphlets about his apocalyptic vision.
He has been arrested on several occasions – the first was in the early 1980s when he served 19 months for "making propaganda with the aim of weakening or destroying national sentiments" – and he spent some of that time in a secure mental hospital.
But since that low point, Oktar’s fortunes have boomed dramatically and he owns a 13-bedroom seaside estate in Silviri which is said to feature its own private zoo, "complete with camels, horses, and two artificial lakes".
People who have left his cult say he controls his followers with an iron hand – even telling them what kind of plastic surgery to have.
One former member said: "Everyone had to be the same. The hairstyle, the shoes, the jackets. It had to be the most expensive brands, like Versace and Gucci."
The cult leader’s Armani suits are a thing of the past now, though. Without some dramatic intervention from his friend Erdogan, the sex cult leader is likely to spend the rest of his life in a prison uniform.
