Donald Trump has had his Twitter account reinstated by the social media platform's new boss Elon Musk.
The decision comes after Musk decided to use the platform to hold a poll to determine whether the outspoken and opinionated former US president should be allowed to have his Twitter ban lifted.
It came out in Trump's favour with 51.8% voting for his reinstatement.
Trump has been unable to tweet since January 2021 when his account was shut down for inciting violence.
He had more than 88.9 million followers at the time.
His account @realDonaldTrump is now active again and, by 1.45am UK time this morning, he had already amassed more than 1.2 million followers.
He has not yet posted anything, though.
Nor is he following any other accounts.
Trump's last tweet, dated January 8, 2021, reads: "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th."
Announcing the lifting of the 76-year-old's ban, Musk tweeted at 12.53am (UK time): "The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated."
Whether Trump will take the SpaceX founder up on his offer remains to be seen.
Since being booted off Twitter, Trump has launched his own social media platform called Truth Social.
Whether he will be able to resist the broader audience that Twitter will guarantee him remains to be seen, though, especially after announcing on Tuesday that he wants to run to be the Republicans' candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
Musk's tweet quickly racked up more than 40,000 comments within the first 45 minutes of being posted, with some of his followers feeling the decision might spell the end for the social media platform.
"R.I.P. Twitter," said one. "People will LEAVE," declared another, whilst a third poster joked in apparent disbelief: "Is this a parody account?"
Others, though, thought it was a victory for free speech, with one person insisting: "The poll is finished, Trump is the winner. But the winner is @elonmusk too.
"This is not a story about politics, it’s a story about freedom. I want to congratulate Elon and Trump."
