Donald Trump has notified Congress and the United Nations (UN) the US will be formally withdrawing from the World Health Organisation.

A US State Department official said the notice of withdrawal would be effective from June 2021.

Democrat Senator Robert Menendez from the Foreign Relations Committee, also shared the news on Twitter and warned the decision would put American lives at risk.

He said: “Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the US from the @WHO in the midst of a pandemic.

“To call Trump’s response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn’t do it justice.

“This won’t protect American lives or interests—it leaves Americans sick & America alone.”

The US President announced his intension to withdraw funding from the WHO in May.
