Defiant Queen sends subtle message she’s ‘not going to step down’, expert claims

The Queen has sent a message to the country that she "is not going to step down" from the monarchy, a royal expert has claimed.

After her Majesty turned down an Oldie of the Year trophy because she felt she didn't meet the criteria, she commented "you are only as old as you feel".

Angela Levin, a royal commentator, says the The Queen's comment is a subtle clue that she isn't going to step down from her royal duties.

Writing on Twitter, Levin said: "I think that the Queen's comment that you are "as old as you feel" is also a nudge to let us all know she is not going to step down as Monarch."

The Daily Star has approached the Palace for comment.

Over the past 29 years, the Oldie of The Year Awards have celebrated people in the older generation that have made a huge contribution to public life.

The 95-year-old monarch "politely but firmly" declined the award, but sent the awards her "warmest best wishes".

In a letter published in the November issue of the award's magazine, The Queen's assistant private secretary Tom Laing-Baker wrote: "Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel, as such The Queen does not believe she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept, and hopes you will find a more worthy recipient."

Her late husband, Prince Philip, received the award in 2011 when he was 90 years old.

The Queen is the nation's longest-running monarch and will be celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, 70 years on the throne, next year.

Last week, new pictures showed the Queen using a walking stick in public for the first time in years at a royal event at Westminster Abbey service.

Her Majesty was joined by her daughter Princess Anne at the national service at Westminster Abbey commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.

She exuded a trademark regal look in a royal blue coat, handbag and matching hat, and used the stick lightly for some extra support.

Queen Elizabeth was last seen using the same walking stick back in January 2004, when she used it to support her mobility following a knee operation.

She still keeps a busy diary of events and audiences and deals with her daily red boxes of official papers.
