Dad mowed down and killed while helping ‘baby duckies’ cross road to safety

A man has been run over and killed by a car as he tried to help ducks get across the road safely.

Casey Rivara, 41, had been shepherding ducks across the street in the city of Rocklin outside of Sacramento in Northern California when he was hit by the motor on Friday (May 19).

Now his wife, Angel Chow, has spoken out about her gratitude for all the help and support she has received.

“We have been deeply touched by the overwhelming love and support we've received for Casey Rivara and our family in these past few days,” she said in a statement to theDaily Mail.

She continued: “We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for the kind messages and gestures of kindness.

“It’s truly humbling to hear how Casey has positively impacted your lives, and we’re extremely grateful for that”.

The dad of two had been driving his kids back from swimming lessons when they came across a family of ducks – including ducklings.

He parked up and hopped out of his motor to help them get across the road before making his way down the street to get to the animals in need.

Witness William Wimsatt, 12, told KCRA: "He got out of the car and was shooing the ducks and everyone was clapping because he was being really nice.

"He helped them get up over the curb because all the little baby duckies were having trouble and then he walked in front of our car.

"All I remember is the sound and then him flying across the intersection.

"His shoes and one of his socks were right in front of our car."

He added: "He was the only person to get out of the car and try and help them and probably the nicest person in the entire area. It’s not fair".

Rocklin Police said he was then struck by a young driver and died at the scene.

His children has been sitting in the car at the time of his death and William's mother went to comfort them.

AGoFundMepage has since been set up to help raise money for his family.
