Two hikers on a trail in Jefferson County were confronted by an armed man Friday morning in an apparent abduction. When deputies arrived, they fired one shot at the suspect who was subdued and taken into custody.
The incident unfolded in the area of South Oak Way and South Newcombe Way, just east of the Fox Hollow Golf Course.
Jacki Kelley, a spokesperson with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, said that at about 8:10 a.m. a hiker witnessed the pair being held at gunpoint and called to report the situation.
The witness stayed on the phone and gave police “a play by play,” Kelley said. The couple reportedly was passing the suspect on the trail when the man allegedly tied either a “leash or a rope” around the woman’s neck. Kelley said the woman’s husband was able to get the gun away from the suspect before police arrived.
When deputies arrived on scene, the suspect pulled out a Taser, Kelley said. A deputy fired one shot at the suspect, who was not hit by gunfire. The suspect was subdued with a Taser, taken into custody and transported to a local hospital.
The golf course is connected to Bear Creek Lake Park by paths and trail systems.
As per protocol, the deputy who fired at the suspect is also under investigation at this time.
