Asia has launched into a dangerous arms race as tensions between US and China have regional powers scrambling to boost missile stockpiles. US allies in the region such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan are reportedly concerned supplies of US-made missiles could be cut off in the event of a war with China. According to the Indian WION news channel, the countries in the region are now looking to develop their own sophisticated long-range weapons sparking a fierce arms race.
WION News anchor Jodie Cohen said: “China and the US possess missiles of the greatest range but others aren’t far behind.
“South Korea, North Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Austalia all have missiles that have a strike range between 800 and 2000km.
“Some of America’s allies are now developing their own arsenals to reduce the risk of supply chains being cut off in a time of war.
“Australia will spend $100 billion over 20 years to develop advanced missiles.”

“Japan has spent millions on long-range air-launched weapons,” continued Ms Cohen.
“Tokyo is developing a new version of a truck-mounted anti-ship missile, the Type 12 has an expected range of 1000km.
“But is it Taiwan that faces the greatest threat from Beijing, Xi Jinping has not ruled out the use of force option to unify Taiwan with the mainland.
“While Taiwan has not publically announced its ballistic missile programme, analysts say Taipei is developing cruise missiles such as the Yun Feng which could strike as far as Beijing.”

“Taipei also has a stockpile of American short-range ballistic missiles.”
She added: “Under Kim Jong-UN North Korea has repeatedly displayed its missiles and has threatened to strike US bases in the Pacific if provoked.
“Pyongyang recently tested what appeared to be an improved version of its proven AM23 missile with a 2.5-ton warhead which could put South Korea and Japan in its crosshairs.
“Other nations in south and southeast Asia are also boosting their arsenals making the entire region a powder keg.”

It comes as China threatened to launch nuclear missiles at Japan on the eve of the Olympic Games as tensions of Taiwan threatened to spill over into an all-out war.
“When we liberate Taiwan, if Japan dares to intervene by force, even if it only deploys one soldier, one plane and one ship, we will not only return reciprocal fire but also start a full-scale war against Japan,” threatened a PLA military spokesperson earlier this week.
“We will use nuclear bombs first. We will use nuclear bombs continuously until Japan declares unconditional surrender for the second time.
“What we want to target is Japan’s ability to endure a war. As long as Japan realizes that it cannot afford to pay the price of war it will not dare to rashly send troops to the Taiwan strait.”
