Beer lovers are rejoicing since the Chancellor has announced a cut on the duty on booze in pubs.

As part of the new budget today (Wednesday, March 15) Jeremy Hunt said: "Today, I will do something that was not possible when we were in the EU and significantly increase the generosity of Draught Relief.

"So that from 1 August the duty on draught products in pubs will be up to 11p lower than the duty in supermarkets, a differential we will maintain as part of a new Brexit pubs guarantee.

"British ale may be warm, but the duty on a pint is frozen."

The Government will be hoping that the news will lead to more beer enthusiasts going back to pubs for cheaper pints following a tricky period for the trade.

Covid-19 followed by a cost of living crisis and supply chain chaos has seen a number of pubs close their doors for good.

It hasn't just been small, independent locals either. Pub giants Wetherspoons have recently announced a raft of closures, with two more of their pubs axed last week.

Meanwhile, Marston's Brewery has been forced to put 61 pubs up for sale including 'Britain's Wonkiest Pub'.

The Crooked House in Dudley, West Midlands, has become a tourist attraction due to its unique leaning effect that means coins and marbles appear rolling uphill on the bar.

The building was constructed in 1765 (becoming a pub in the 1830s) and now has one side 4ft lower than the other.

People have travelled from all over the world to the Black County to enjoy a pint there, but locals now fear for its future if a suitable buyer isn't found.

Regular Jim Knowlson, 54, said: "For me, it's a great chance for somebody to breathe new life into it.

"We're concerned for its future as we've seen so many pubs around here close for good. But this place is very special, it has to be saved for future generations."
