British man dies during Portugal flight after crew find him unconscious

A British man has died on a passenger plane after flight staff found him unconscious.

The TAP Air Portugal flight from London to Lisbon had to make an emergency landing in Spain after a medical emergency was declared.

Workers at Santiago de Compostela Airport in the northwestern Galicia region called the the emergency services after being informed of the incident, and paramedics were dispatched ready for the flight's arrival.

The passenger was later pronounced dead by medical staff. It is believed he suffered a heart attack.

He has been identified only by the initials I. S. Y., and was confirmed to be 71 years old.

The Daily Star has approached TAP Air Portugal for comment.

It comes only days after a flight from Spain was diverted after an emergency in the sky led to the Jet2 plane needing to land.

The aircraft left Malaga but was forced to stop en route to Glasgow Airport last Thursday (May 5), where it was scheduled to land at 2:55pm.

Jet2 flight LS134 issued a ‘Squawk 7700’ emergency over the Bay of Biscay near the city of Lorient and descended quickly, before landing at Nantes Atlantique Airport just after 12:20pm.

It was later revealed that a passenger had suffered a medical emergency. Data from the Flightradar24 website indicated that the emergency call was made around two hours into the journey.

Also last week an easyJet flight from Belfast to Alicante had to France due to a medical emergency after urgent medical assistance was required.

The flight from Belfast International Airport on Tuesday (May 3), was forced to land in Brest after a passenger became unwell.
