The UK left the European Union on January 1, 2021, after Britain secured an 11th-hour trade deal following nearly a year of intense negotiations. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has continued to insist Britain will flourish outside of the EU following the end of 47 years of membership to the continental bloc. But A C Grayling has continued to lash out at Brexit, and has frequently called for Britain to rejoin the EU.

Now he has launched a furious attack on Twitter, claiming Brexit is “an epic lie made by liars”.

The Rejoiner raged: “Brexit. The lie that produces lies and more lies and divides, diminishes and impoverishes our country.

“Own goal after own goal in embarrassing shameful succession.

“Brexit. An epic lie made by liars.”

But his comments were met by a furious reaction from some Twitter users replying to his post on the social media platform, with many becoming increasingly tired of his criticism and calls for the UK to rejoin the EU.

One person wrote: “You really have nothing to say that is worthwhile, do you?”

A second Twitter user posted: “Didn’t you personally beg the EU to give us a bad deal?”

Another person commented: “We voted to join a trading block.

“No one ever voted for what the EU has become.

“Which is why Remoaners NEVER wanted anyone to have a say again.

“Notice how there are no calls for referendums across the EU, in case people have ‘changed their minds’?”

However, several other people strongly agreed with Mr Grayling’s latest outburst against Brexit.

One person said: “Brexit has divided the UK. That is clear.

“It’s a massive own goal. Brexit must be reversed.”

A second Twitter user wrote: “This Brexit debacle is really ramping up now and the frightening thing about it is the speed of this unravelling.

“Also the total unpredictability of the next few years will only exacerbate the general malaise.

“England feels more and more like a prison.”

The question is why? Why did Boris back it?

“Was it just to become PM? And why did so many people fall for the lies.”

Brexit talks between the UK and the EU will resume over the coming days, with the thorny issue of the Northern Ireland Protocol likely to be top of the agenda.

Over the weekend, Brexit minister Lord Frost insisted the UK will not sweep away the Northern Ireland Protocol and warned tensions over the deal risks creating “cold mistrust” with the EU.

Following a meeting with Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove in London earlier today, Irish deputy Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Ireland expects the UK to announce further extensions to post-Brexit grace periods on goods imports into both Northern Ireland and into the rest of the UK.

He told Irish broadcaster RTE: “The expectation is that the United Kingdom will announce a further extension of the grace periods, not just in relation to Northern Ireland but also imports from the EU and Ireland into the UK.

Mr Varadkar also said he was told by Mr Gove told that Britain “doesn’t want to walk away from the Protocol but does want to make it more workable”.
