POLL: Is Keir Starmer right to demote Angela Rayner?

Angela Rayner confirmed as Shadow Levelling Up Secretary

Sir Keir Starmer has demoted Angela Rayner in the shadow cabinet today as part of a Labour reshuffle.

The Party’s deputy leader was offered Lisa Nandy’s levelling up post, as well as the role of shadow deputy prime minister.

Speculation of a rift between Rayner and Sir Keir has been mounting for months, with Ms Rayner recently accused of jostling for a guaranteed senior role if Labour wins the next general election.

The MP for Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester has previously caused outrage with some of her comments, such as when she called Conservatives “scum” at a Labour Party conference.

Demoting Rayner has been considered by some as Mr Starmer’s way of consolidating power in his party as the deadline for the next election draws closer.

She has held the roles of Shadow First Secretary of State, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and Shadow Secretary of State for the Future of Work in Labour’s senior team.

It is thought that Ed Miliband’s job as energy spokesperson is also at risk as Labour tries to revamp its outlook on the environment following defeat in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election which was blamed on ULEZ.

Changes in the opposition frontbench follows Rishi Sunak’s mini reshuffle last week when Claire Coutinho was promoted to Net Zero secretary and Ben Wallace was replaced by Grant Shapps as Defence Secretary.
