Speaking on ITV’s Peston on Wednesday night, Shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry claimed the public had already decided that the Prime Minister “was a liar”. Ms Thornberry added the public believe the Prime Minister has been “taking the mickey” for his failure to take responsibility for the Downing Street lockdown parties in 2020 and 2021.

She said: “I think that at the moment it’s not Labour banging on about this it’s the public.

“That’s what the public are talking about and they continue to talk about the fact that they believe the Prime Minister has been taking the mickey.

“That he’s been lying to them.”

Ms Thornberry continued by arguing Mr Johnson was attempting to escape political damage through lying.

She said: “Parties are one thing but it’s all the lies.

“Day after day another lie being completely distracted hoping that this lie will get him out of trouble.

“It lasts for just a day and then he has to put in another one because something else turns up.”

Ms Thornberry also argued she was concerned Mr Johnson was prolonging the investigation process for his own benefit.

She said: “I’m concerned about where this is going.

“There’s not going to be a possibility that people may say that we have to wait until the end of the police investigation.

“We’ve got to wait until the end of the court case, how long might that take?

We have to wait until everything is finished before we make a decision one way or another?”

The Islington South MP concluded that she felt the public had already made their mind up.

She said: “I personally think that the public have come to the conclusion a long time ago.

“To that extent they’re bored because they’ve decided that the Prime Minister is a liar.

“That he can’t be relied on, they can’t trust anything he says and he can’t lead them.”
