Mr Verhofstadt, who served as the European Parliament’s Brexit representative, raised eyebrows with his remark, given the Parliament has been in existence since 1952. His tweet related to plans for a conference to discuss the future of Europe, which has been delayed by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The conference’s timetable, or mandate, has not yet been finalised, and Mr Verhofstadt suggested the Parliament was failing in its duty to hold the European Commission and the European Council to account.

He tweeted: “A year and a half into the mandate, the European Parliament hasn’t found its role yet.

“The Flag of European Union as a whole suffers from the resulting lack of direction.

“We need the Conference on the Future of Europe to recalibrate EU politics!”

His remark triggered a swift reaction, with one Twitter user commenting: “Just strengthening the case for #Brexit even more.”

Another suggested: “Less EU is the solution”, in turn prompting Twitter user Karin Lane to reply: “No EU is the solution.”

Another suggested Mr Verhofstadt was a “bureaucrat” who failed to realise the EU was “too big and diverse to fit into a Federal straitjacket”.

In reference to Mr Verhofstadt’s frequent advocacy of a United States of Europe, they added: “Stick to free trade area with common currency & current set of rules. Stop the empire building.

“The more u impose your Federal dream, the likelier that others follow Brexit…”

Another added: “The EU operates on Mafia principles.

“This does not serve the citizens but enriches the fat cat bureaucrats and globalists.”

European Federalist said: “You can’t even decide on the daylight hour change the last three years.

“You want us to believe that the useless bureaucracy of Brussels will decide something so fundamental like the future if a continent? Get serious Guy.”

Another poster suggested Mr Verhofstadt and his fellow MPs should ask themselves what it was they were actually doing.

He asked: “So, 700 MEPs in the EU Parliament, including you, each drawing a salary of £80,000 plus expenses of (say) £50,000 and you’re saying the EU Parliament hasn’t got a role?”

However, Mr Verhofstadt was not without his supporters.

Henk Nijsingh said: “The EU must build its internal strength and trust in order to speak with one voice and be a powerful player in international politics.

“That’s not the case yet as is illustrated by the case of Orban.

“One simple man can make Europe weak in all it strives and aspires to stand for.”
