GB New presenter Colin Brazier and commentator Emma Webb have reacted furiously to comments from a French minister who said the UK needs to pull its weight in dealing with asylum seekers. The slap down comes in response to remarks from the French European Affairs Minister Clement Beaune who argued France and Britain need to thrash out a new migration deal following Brexit.

“This will be a red rag to a bull for many people”, warned presenter Brazier.

“This is a French minister who says that the UK needs to pull its weight in dealing with asylum seekers and says there should be a new migratory deal with Britain post-Brexit.

“People are saying hang on, it is the French being too laxed that is the course of this problem.”

“Absolutely this is a real kick in the teeth,” agreed Ms Webb.

She continued: “I think many people around the country will be thinking that as he says this is a red rag to a bull.

“We have been throwing tens of millions of pounds at the French to try and deal with this situation with illegal migrants crossing.

“And for the French minister to then suggest that one of the reasons…or intimate that one of the reasons why there is crowding in this area of France and that these crossings have been incentivized.

“The idea that that is because of our softness which obviously is something Priti Patel is trying to deal with at the moment, rather than simply the fact the French aren’t trying to deal with the problem as they have said that they would given how much money we have thrown at them.”

Mr Beaune said the UK should take a share of the asylum claims despite no longer being a member of the EU.

He said: “We must, after Brexit, have a new migratory deal no doubt between the EU and Britain so that we can expel, or direct a certain number of migrants to the UK so they can request asylum.

“It’s [Britain’s] responsibility.

“We have seen sometimes that it is the attractiveness of Britain’s asylum system that is in question.

“We are the ones who have paid a high price over the past 10 years – we see it in Calais regarding organisation, humanitarian aid, and police checks.”

In response, a Conservative source told The Telegraph: “Monsieur Beanune needs his eyes testing.

“Day after day, French boats are escorting migrants into UK waters, we would love a new deal with the EU or France but so far both are refusing to discuss it.

“We are reforming the system through our New Plan for Immigration and would suggest that he has a read of that before making such nonsensical comments.”
