President Emmanuel Macron, top, signalled he was willing to blow up more than three years of painstaking talks between Brussels and Canberra.

Eurocrats had hoped they could conclude a free-trade agreement with Australia this year. But they now fear those chances are over because of French fury over the Aukus military pact.

France’s hardline Europe minister Clement Beaune said it’s “unthinkable” that a deal can now be reached.

He added: “Keeping one’s word is the condition of trust between democracies and between allies.”
