Carrie Symonds’ touching Instagram post announcing engagement to Boris Johnson

Carrie Symonds announced she and Prime Minister Boris Johnson are expecting their first child in a touching Instagram post.

The pair are also set to marry after getting engaged in secret at the end of last year, Miss Symonds said.

They were the first unmarried couple to occupy Downing Street when they moved into No. 10 last year – and Mr Johnson will now become the first British prime minister to marry in office for 250 years.

Their baby will be at least the sixth child with three different women for Mr Johnson, who is going through a divorce with his second wife.

They'll be the first couple in No 10 to welcome a child since Tony Blair in 2000.

Miss Symonds' Instagram post states: "I wouldn't normally post this kind of thing on here but i wanted my friends to find out from me…

"Many of you already know but for my friends that still don't, we got engaged at the end of last year… and we've got a baby hatching early summer.

"Feel incredibly blessed."

She uploaded a picture of Mr Johnson giving her a kiss on the cheek alongside her post.

A spokesperson for the couple said: "The Prime Minister and Miss Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer."

Mum-to-be Miss Symonds, 31, has rarely been seen in public in recent months and has been keeping a low profile since Mr Johnson won last December’s general election.

The Prime Minister, 55, had four children – all adults now – with his estranged spouse Marina Wheeler and a love child conceived during an affair with property developer Helen Macintyre.

Asked as recently as December’s general election campaign, Mr Johnson has repeatedly refused to reveal how many children he has fathered, but Miss Symonds’ pregnancy is likely to renew questions about the guarded politician’s family life.

There had been speculation for weeks that Miss Symonds – the first unmarried partner of a prime minister to reside in 10 Downing Street – was pregnant.

Miss Symonds is the youngest partner of a Prime Minister in 173 years.

The former Conservative Party communications chief took on a new personal adviser, Sarah Vaughan-Brown, this month.

She will reportedly help Miss Symonds with her charity interests.

Mr Johnson will become the first leader to have a child in No. 10 since Tony Blair's son, Leo, was born in 2000.
