The new Prime Minister appointed James Cleverly as her Foreign Secretary and Chris Heaton-Harris as Northern Ireland Secretary to take Brexit forward. Politico reports that Mr Cleverly will “undoubtedly be that good cop” and Mr Heaton-Harrie a “true blue Brexiteer”. Ms Truss is threatening to unilaterally override parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol, a move the EU has branded “illegal”.

In her first full day as Prime Minister she said she wants a “negotiated solution” to the row warning it must “deliver all the things” the U.K. has demanded before.

Now the EU is said to be preparing for the worst, drawing up legislation allowing them to retaliate if Ms Truss pulls the trigger.
